Managing Bunion Pain

Bunion pain can make it difficult to walk, and the right foot support can help ease the pain of your bunions. At Family Foot & Ankle Associates of Maryland in Olney, Camp Springs/Clinton, Silver Spring, Kensington, Laurel and Maple Lawn, MD, our podiatrists treat patients with bunions who are struggling with pain. A podiatrist can diagnose and treat problems of the ankles and feet, easing pain, and improving your ability to stay mobile.

How Bunions are Formed

Bunions occur when the base of your big toe presses outward, and your big toe starts to put pressure on your other toes. Bunions can form naturally due to a foot deformity, or occur over time because of tight-fitting shoes. If you wear shoes that push your toes together, this can lead to bunions forming. Arthritis in the feet can also cause bunions to form, and it's important to always wear comfortable, well-fitting shoes to avoid making bunions worse.

Treatment for Bunions

It is possible for bunions to not cause any symptoms, while others have bunions that make it almost impossible to walk. As you start to experience symptoms from bunions, the first thing you can do is to ensure that you are always wearing comfortable shoes. Any shoes that press on your bunions and cause additional pain should not be worn. You can wear toe separators, that are used to put your toes in a more natural position. You can try anti-inflammatory medication to reduce symptoms. If you are not able to find bunion relief using conservative treatment, a podiatrist may recommend surgery to correct the problem.

What to Expect From Bunion Surgery

There are several types of surgery that can be used when you have bunions. A podiatrist will talk to you about your options, and explain what treatment should be used in your situation. Part of your foot bone can be removed to straighten out your large toe, or tissue can be removed from the toe joint area. The bones in your toe can be fused together if necessary. After surgery, it will take a few weeks or more for you to recover, and be able to use your foot like normal.
