Diagnosing, Treating, and Managing Bunions

Our esteemed podiatry doctors at Family Foot and Ankle Associates of Maryland in Olney, Camp Springs/Clinton, Silver Spring, Kensington, Laurel and Maple Lawn,MD, explain that this growth is a benign bone deformity outside the great toe at the base of the joint. Occasionally, we see a small bunion form outside the pinky toe.

Bunions develop due to,

  • Wearing the incorrect show size and width
  • A foot injury
  • A congenital deformity
  • A history of bunions in the family (not genetics)
  • Deformed foot structure
  • Neuromuscular problems
  • Flat feet

Over time, this worsens and becomes more prominent, causing the great toe to angle inward toward the other toes. Without treatment, the bunion becomes inflamed, causing foot and leg pain when walking.

Complications such as hammertoes, bursitis, and arthritis can develop in the joint. You will experience increased chronic pain if you are on your feet frequently.

Our focus is to relieve the pressure on your foot and stop the joint from enlarging. Our doctors have some noninvasive treatment options.

  • Wear protective padding to help decrease inflammation from shoe friction.
  • Remove developing corns and calluses.
  • Purchase the correct shoe size and width for extra room for this bunion.
  • Obtain prescribed custom-made orthotics.
  • Exercise the foot, thus increasing joint mobility and decreasing stiffness.
  • Wear prescribed nighttime splints to help align the joint.
  • Consider having the bunion removed surgically.

Sometimes, surgical removal of this bone is the only option. Surgery eliminates the chronic pain and straightens the great toe.
