Why Do Diabetics Need Foot Care?

In a patient with diabetes, the high levels of sugar (or glucose) in the blood can cause nerve damage and impact circulation, resulting in decreased sensitivity in the extremities. This is referred to as diabetic neuropathy, and it makes you more prone to infections, such as a small injury or an ingrown toenail becoming infected. With reduced circulation, healing slows down significantly and can put diabetics at risk for amputation if a wound does not heal.

Diabetic Foot Care Tips

When you have diabetes you already spend time and effort monitoring your health by your blood sugar, but that attention needs to extend to your feet! You should:

  • Inspect your feet each day for any abrasions or sores. A quick look could help prevent a small sore from turning into a non-healing wound.
  • Wash your feet daily with lukewarm water, mild soap, and a soft washcloth.
  • Dry your feet completely, then use a moisturizing cream on the heels to prevent skin from cracking. Do not moisturize in between your toes.
  • Maintain your toenails. Cut the toenails straight across regularly to prevent ingrown toenails that can become infected.
  • Do not try to treat corns and calluses by yourself. Always seek help from your podiatrist.
  • Wear clean, dry socks every day, and avoid socks with tight bands around the ankle because they can affect your circulation.
  • Invest in comfortable, supportive footwear and avoid going barefoot.

Taking these precautions every day can help prevent severe infections and even amputations. If you are diagnosed with diabetes and have not seen a podiatrist, call us for diabetic foot care.
