Treating Your Ankle Sprain

Are you worried that you may have sprained your ankle? Your podiatrists at Family Foot and Ankle Associates of Maryland, Dr. Marc Goldberg, Dr. Michael Frank, and Dr. Adam Lowy, can ease your pain and help you get back on your feet again. Their offices are conveniently located in Kensington, Olney, Silver Spring, and Camp Springs/Clinton, MD.

Could your pain be caused by a sprain?

Sprains occur when the ligaments that connect the bones in a joint stretch or tear. Ankles are a common site for sprains, as it's easy to turn your ankle when walking over uneven ground, playing sports, or even stepping off a curb. If your ankle is sprained, you may experience:

  • Pain that may increase when you walk or put weight on your ankle
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Stiffness
  • Trouble walking

What can you do to treat a sprained ankle?

Although many people consider sprains minor injuries, they can cause lasting damage if they're not treated promptly. If you've just sprained your ankle, elevate your foot and wrap a compression bandage around your ankle to reduce swelling. Ice packs and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication, like ibuprofen and naproxen sodium can ease swelling and pain.

Sprained ankles often feel much better after home treatment, but that's not always the case. Call your Kensington, Olney, Silver Spring, and Camp Springs/Clinton foot doctors if:

  • Your ankle isn't getting better after a week or two.
  • You find it difficult or impossible to stand or walk.
  • You're in severe pain.

Depending on the severity of your injury, your treatment plan may include:

  • A walking boot and crutches: Keeping weight off your ankle will reduce pain and pressure, making it easier for your ankle to heal.
  • Physical therapy: Physical therapy can improve range of motion, ease stiffness and strengthen the muscles that support your ankle. When your muscles are stronger, you'll be less likely to reinjured your ankle.
  • Surgery: Most people never need surgery, but it may be helpful if a severe sprain makes your ankle unstable.
