What Are Bunions?
A bunion is a bony bump that forms on the side of the big toe when the big toe is forced towards the other toes. It gets progressively worse over time and can become painful to wear shoes with a bunion.
Getting a Bunion
Bunions in Kensington, MD, are more common in women because the biggest cause is constricting footwear that forces the toes together, but anyone can get a bunion. When the toes are forced together the toe joint becomes unstable and a bunion forms.
Treatment Options for Bunions
Depending on the size of your bunion and the severity of your symptoms your podiatrist's recommendations could include:
Changing your footwear. If you already have a bunion our podiatrist will almost always recommend changing immediately comfortable shoes that support your arch and give your toes room to wiggle.
Wearing pads and icing the toe are two things that can help ease the pain caused by a bunion. You can also use over-the-counter painkillers recommended by your podiatrist.
Custom foot orthotics worn in the shoes can help realign the bones in your foot and relieve pain while you walk and are commonly recommended when you have bunions.
Bunion Surgery
A bunionectomy is typically only recommended if more conservative measures don't relieve your symptoms. The bunion is removed to realign the bones in your foot, and you can resume normal activities after 6 to 12 weeks of healing.
