Why Diabetic Foot Care Is Important

Foot care is important, for everyone of course, but especially for those with diabetes. With the nerve issues and circulation problems common in diabetics, problems with the feet can turn into nightmares overnight. We at Family Foot & Ankle Associates of Maryland, serving the Olney, Camp Springs/Clinton, Silver Spring, Kensington, Laurel, and Maple Lawn, MD area, know about diabetic foot care.

Diabetic Circulation Problems and your Feet

If you’re a person living with diabetes you know there are many issues that come with the poor circulation. This can affect the foot’s blood supply and keep any sore or cut from healing.  This circulation reduction can also be caused by narrowing arteries. Diabetics who want to help their blood circulation should not:

  • Smoke
  • Have many high blood sugar instances
  • Have high cholesterol

By not smoking, keeping your cholesterol and blood sugar stable, and by exercising daily to keep the blood moving, you’re keeping your risk of circulation issues lowered.

Diabetic Daily Foot Care

To help prevent foot problems, diabetics may want to incorporate a daily regime that includes:

  • Moisturizing the dry skin – this helps prevent cracks and can keep your skin healthy. Remember that you shouldn’t put it between your toes as that may cause buildup that doesn’t dry.
  • Daily washing – washing your feet every day and drying them well can also help increase your chances of preventing foot issues.
  • Daily overview – looking over your feet to see if they are red, hot, or swelling can help you find problems early before they become serious issues.

Avoid Foot Damage

  • Make sure your shoes are proper fitting and never go barefoot.
  • Keep your toenails cut and trimmed
  • Have any calluses checked by a doctor for possible removal
  • Keep your feet away from space heaters or other heat sources
