What Causes Heel Pain?

Plantar fasciitis is the most common cause of heel pain. This is when your plantar fascia, or the thick band of muscle that runs along the base of your foot, becomes inflamed. If you notice the pain is worse when you first get up and start moving but improves once you've stretched your foot some, it is most likely plantar fasciitis.

What Are My Treatment Options?

When you see your podiatrist for heel pain, they will almost certainly recommend changing to comfortable and supportive footwear that has ample support for the heel and the arch and wearing them as much as possible, never going barefoot.

Your podiatrist can fit you with custom shoe orthotics that can give your heel and arch extra support and help relieve pain while you walk. Your podiatrist can also prescribe stretching and strengthening exercises for your feet. These can release the tightness and improve the flexibility of the foot which will help relieve pain.

Plantar fascia release surgery is only considered when other measures haven't improved your condition, but it is an option if you are still struggling with plantar fasciitis pain.
