Taking Care of Diabetic Feet

Diabetes can affect many areas of your life and your body and it’s important that you’re taking the time to learn what proper care might be. A crucial part of managing your diabetes is making sure that you are taking care of your feet. Our podiatrists at Family Foot & Ankle Associates of Maryland in Olney, Camp Springs/Clinton, Silver Spring, Kensington, Laurel, and Maple Lawn, MD, can explain what proper diabetic foot care should look like and how it can help keep you healthy.

Taking Care of Diabetic Feet

When you’re dealing with diabetes, many people struggle with something known as peripheral neuropathy. This causes your extremities to lose feeling, meaning that if you get a cut or wound on your foot, you may not notice the pain because of the numbness. Diabetes also affects how your body heals itself, meaning that the cut could go unnoticed and open for weeks. This can lead to infection and other serious complications.

Diabetic foot care should be part of your daily routine and our podiatrists, can explain what your routine should look like. It’s important that you check your feet each day for any signs of cuts or blisters. If you notice any issues, you should visit your podiatrist for care as soon as possible.

Be sure to wash your feet daily with soap and warm water. Once they’re clean, you should completely dry the feet before moisturizing. This can prevent your feet from cracking and developing blisters or corns. Always wear clean and dry socks each day and ensure that you’re looking for thin, cotton socks that allow your feet to breathe during the summer.
